My Favorite Women in Video Games: Relm Arrowny
Games she appeared in: Final Fantasy VI
Is she being rescued/saved as a key plot point: Does it count if the rescuer then needs their own rescuing that she assists with?
For our video game BFF date, we would: Go to the museum so Relm could explain to me how her paintings are better
This week’s column came as a suggestion from my husband when I asked him his favorite female video game character. While I could talk endlessly about the Rainbow Road in Mario-Kart or how difficult the Lion King game could get, his experience with the SNES included role playing games that I’m still catching up to. However, when he first explained Relm, I immediately fell in love with a character that combines awesome stats with a sassy attitude and aptitude towards the arts.
Many characters in RPGs depend on their physical strength or magical items, but Relm is unique because her magic is based around her artistic talent. As one of the strongest and funniest characters in the game, Relm drives the story by trying to prove herself. She shows the other party members that she is exceedingly capable in a fight and insightful in poltiical situations. What I find most unique about her is that her powers are not based on causing damage or other martial needs, but rather Relm is a creator. Her success isn’t based around destruction, but rather by taking her artistic talents and using them for good. She may walk around with paint on her cheek and make jokes with NPCs, but her guidance helps the party build relationships and aid the player towards success in the game. But what I love most about her is that one of her powers is based around having a fake mustache and there is very little as cute as Relm in a mustache.
By the way, if you have any suggestions on a character you would like to see here in the future, please leave a comment. I’m always excited to learn a little more about an awesome character and shine the spotlight on another kick-ass lady.
