My Favorite Women in Video Games: Isabela

Games she appeared in: Dragon Age Origins/Dragon Age 2

Is she being rescued/saved as a key plot point: If it did, she would never admit it.

For our video game BFF date, we would: Go for a mead at the Hanged Man and hustle card games.

I wear my Bioware fangirl status on my sleeve and one of the best parts of their series is the ability to play a female protagonist. The Dragon Age series is no different, allowing players the opportunity to play as a favorite of female characters from a Noble-born Rogue to a Common Dwarf to a City Elf. However, the protagonist in both Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 are not the only interesting, well-written, and fun to play female characters. One of these party members is Isabela who had a small scene in Dragon Age Origins and served as a main character in Dragon Age 2.

My first play-through of Dragon Age 2, I was unable to gain the friendship of Isabela, the confident and arrogant pirate captain. My Hawke (the main character of Dragon Age 2) was too charitable and Isabela complained with each person I agreed to help. However, which each appearance Isabela made me laugh and I loved her unwillingness to take grief from anyone, so I knew with my second play-through, her friendship would be a goal. When I did gain that friendship, Isabela's character became multidimensional, transforming from the comedic relief to a character who described her fears and her motivations openly. She challenged my choices and challenged the beliefs of the other party members. While she is just one of great female characters from the game, she is reason enough to pick up this game and give it a shot. Just make sure to listen to her side conversations with other party members, she'll teach you a thing or two.
