My Favorite Women in Video Games : Alyx Vance
Games she appeared in: The Half-Life series
Is she being rescued/saved as a key plot point: At times, Alyx is the only reason Gordon Freeman can get anything done.
For our video game BFF date, we would: Alyx might not have a time for a BFF date, or she would just trick me into helping with a mission.
There are very few things can set a gamer off into whining, pleading, or begging like the discussion and continued promise of a new Half-Life game. It has been 5 years since Gordon Freeman has come to us via a new story, and with no new news from Valve, everyone might be waiting longer. But more tragically for this female gamer, it has been 5 years since we have seen more of Alyx Vance, Gordon’s cohort in fighting the Combine.
Alyx is more than just a companion in the series, playing an important role as a leader of the human resistance and using her skills as a hacker to further your plan to defeat the enemy. She proves herself to be a nuanced character, her intelligence allowing her to give interesting and well-thought out opinions. Additionally, she is a source of humor, making jokes and providing the player with levity and support.
Alyx also serves a vital role in providing an emotional connection the story and to the game. At times, first-person shooters can become impersonal and it is up to the characters that you interact with to help solidify your personal relationship with the player character. Alyx and her backstory come to the front in Half-Life 2: Episode 2 where you, as Gordon, have to help save her life and become bonded to her. She may not be a playable party member, but she gives the game a heart that would be difficult to achieve without her.
